Losing a Loved One

Photograph displayed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York New York, 1998

This image displays the negative emotional effects that arise after a loved one dies.

This image, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York, New York, shows many women surrounding a dead man.  They are expressing different emotions through the looks on their faces.

There are multiple women in a room weeping around a dead man.  There is a woman resting her body against the man.  She has her arm draped over his body which is wrapped in a red and white blanket .  Another woman is trying to reach over the lady to be able to touch the man lying in the bed.  Many of the other woman long to touch the man.  Six faces are shown in the image expressing emotions of grief and sadness.  One woman in the back corner of the room in the image has no emotion on her face.  Another hand is resting on the pillow while another hand is reaching to touch the man’s face.

This image displays the negative emotions that occur after the death of losing a loved one.  The woman resting her body on the man seems to be the gentleman’s mother.  She is heartbroken and wants to hold onto her son.  Other women in the room could represent family members such as sisters, cousins, or aunts.

The dead gentleman in the photo looks like he died at a young age.  He could have had a wife who is also present in this image.  She could be the lady standing behind the man with her hands reaching towards him.

There is a young girl sitting in the background of the image.  She is behind the chaos of the other women surrounding the dead man.  This lady could be a family member such as his sister.  She is not associating with the rest of the family who is longing over the death of the man.  She may be afraid to express her emotions about how she really feels about the death of the man or she could have had no relation with him.  She might be avoiding the drama that associates with the death of the man.

There is no proven evidence on how the man died.  The image seems to be from an early era due to the way the women are dressed.  They are wearing button down clothing and bonnets.  This time period could have taken place during a time of war and man could have died as a solider fighting on the battlefield.  The man also could have died from illness.  Many years ago, disease was prevalent and medicine was not easily accessible.  Many people died from yellow fever, the plague, or the flu.  There are endless possibilities to explain how the man died.

When times are tough, families tend to come together.  Death is an emotional experience for all.  It affects the lives of the loved one’s family.  The women came together to weep over losing the man of the family.

These women express different negative emotions after the death of a man.
