Extend your Support

This image represents African children’s desperate need for nourishment.

This black and white image features unclothed African children standing around together. Physically, the boy’s ribs are showing and their stomachs are enlarged. The focus of the image is on two African boys who are extending their arms. The two boys have worry in their eyes. Instead of having smiles on their faces, they have dirt. The boys in the background do not appear to be happy either. One is looking at the ground, another looks concerned looking in a different direction, and another boys face does not show, only the side of his head.

Based on the evidence from the image, it can be interpreted that these children are starving and desperately want food. The boy’s physical conditions imply that they are malnourished, since their bones are showing. The action of the two boys reaching out their arms indicates that they are reaching for someone to hand them food. The worried, sad, and hopeful faces on the two boys imply that they desperately want someone to help them. In contrast, if these boys were photographed running around smiling then it would not be interpreted that they are weak and desperately wanting food because they would be energized and content with their current state. Therefore, it is accurate to state that these boys are weak and wanting nourishment.

In addition, since the image is black and white, the overall theme and feeling one gets from looking at it is more serious and dramatized, as opposed to an image that is full of color and a setting that is sunny. The fact that these children are alone also serves to emphasis the meaning of this image (that the children need help) because they do not have a guardian looking after them. The dirt on their faces demonstrates to the viewer that they have been uncared for and are not in good condition/health. They appear to be unbathed, most likely because they do not have ample water supply. Young children do not know how to survive on their own and the fact that there are no adults in this image makes its viewer feel for the children’s awful situation more. Thus, making the message louder. These children are helpless victims and desperately need help.

  1. The first thing I noticed was how perfect your title fit the photograph, I really thought that was a terrific choice. I love the way you described the image, I could see it perfectly in my head. However, in the description paragraph I think you should talk about what first grabbed your attention, and why it grabbed your attention. I thought you interpreted the image very well, but I do think you could have mentioned something about why there was dirt on their faces. I liked that you brought the fact that the parents seemed to be absent in a time where they should be nurturing their children. Overall, once again you grabbed my attention, and I really was hooked into what you were writing about.

  2. I really enjoyed your interpretation. Personally I couldn’t of looked at this picture too long without feeling all these emotions, so I give you props on having to look bath and forth on this image. I really think your interpretation covered everything that it needed to, and your description didn’t leave anything out either. You did back up your facts about how they are needy and uncared for. I think your argument was very strong and you backed up your thesis a hundred percent with your argumentative facts. I really feel that you got your point across to the readers and there is nothing more you can do to prove your thesis. All in all great Curation!
